About Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

WHAT IS AN ADU?

ADU is an abbreviation for Accessory Dwelling Unit. Sometimes, these are also referred to as Carriage Houses, Mother-in-Law Units, Granny Flats, or Casitas.

ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS CAN BE A GREAT WAY TO INVEST IN REAL ESTATE.

When you own your home, you’re able to take advantage of extra space and turn it into a space for family to stay, as well as short- or long-term rentals. Whether it’s an unfinished basement, a large backyard, or a garage, there are a number of ways to turn that extra space into an extra income stream while improving and maintaining your home.

PAY ATTENTION TO LOCAL REGULATIONS.

If you’re thinking about investing in an ADU, be sure to do your research about what’s required where you live. You’ll have to make sure your property is or gets zoned for an ADU, as well as following local housing codes.

WHEN MIGHT AN ADU BE A GOOD IDEA FOR YOU TO INVEST YOUR TIME AND MONEY IN?

  • Have a teenage son or daughter who’s going off to college or ready to start moving out on their own?

  • Do your parents want to live nearby while still maintaining their independence?

  • Are you retiring and want to downsize but don’t necessarily want to sell your home?

  • Want to add a garage? Why not include living space above the garage, too?

  • Looking to rent out part of your home for extra income?
